The Not-So Disengaged Young Person

4 Strategies for Increasing Civic Participation amongst a Younger Generation

Shyheim Sneed

In 22 days, Shyheim (shy-heem) Snead will be graduating with a BA in Political Science with a minor in Education Studies. Originally from Bridgeport, CT, Shyheim served as the Student Trustee on the AU Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2017, and as the only student on the AU Presidential Search Committee. He is currently the Director of the Kennedy Political Union, AU’s nonpartisan speaker’s bureau where he leads a team of 20 students. In this role, he has created a partnership with The HIll’s Newsmakers Series, and has brought speakers including Malala Yousafzai and Gabrielle Union.

His passion for education extends outside of the classroom as well, as he coordinated an initiative to adopt a DC public school and led an Alternative Break to New Orleans focused on educational equity in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Professionally, Shyheim has worked with DC Public Schools and as an intern in the Executive Office of the Muriel Bowser.

Shyheim was a 2018 Rhodes Scholarship Finalist, is a 2017 Truman Scholar, and completed the 2017 Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship at Princeton University.

You can listen to his TedX talk last January on Bridging the Gap between Communities and Schools here.  It's definitely worth a listen.

After his speech, we will open up the floor for questions.
