Howard University Summer of Democracy Teach-in

About this event

On April 17 and 18, LWVDC volunteers participated in Howard's inaugural  Summer of Democracy Teach-in, on the Howard campus. Attendees were HU students and HU community members. We were invited by Dr. Marcus Board Jr., Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, and Dr. Eleanor King. In all, there were dozens of presentations designed to launch HU students and the community  into a summer of activism.

Volunteers staffed tables both days with information about voter registration and engagement, the campaign for DC full rights, the Local Funds Act, VOTE411, and LWVDC membership. We had numerous visitors to our table. Many signed the DC statehood petition on the ipad, took VOTE411 and statehood information, as well as packs of postcards to mail to friends in other states asking them to urge their House members to support the Local Funds Act. Two students joined the LWVDC and many took membership information. Admitted students and their families were on campus and visited our table.

Anne Anderson led a session titled Gaining New Rights: DC Statehood. Here is a link to the video recording of Anne's presentation:
Nile Blass, LWVDC member and LWVUS staff member, also participated in the Teach-in.
