Where We Stand
The League of Women Voters strongly supports Gun Control to protect the health and safety of citizens through limiting the accessibility and regulating the ownership of handguns and semi-automatic weapons. We support regulation of firearms for consumer safety.
The Supreme Court struck down the District’s ban on handguns in the home in the 2007 Heller v. District of Columbia decision. The D.C. Council has since amended these laws to conform to the ruling, but Congress has threatened to relax them well beyond what the Supreme Court required.
We are advocating to preserve the Council’s authority to enact sensible gun control laws consistent with Heller, and we have filed amicus briefs with our ally DC Appleseed and others.
DC Appleseed Center for Law & Justice solves problems affecting the daily lives of those who live and work in the National Capital area. DC Appleseed works with volunteer attorneys, business leaders, and community experts to identify pressing challenges, conduct research and analysis, make specific recommendations for reform, and implement effective solutions.
